Edmonton Burlesque Events Presents: Peekaboo Pointe

Capital City Burlesque dances in ᐊᒥᐢᑲᐧᒋᐋᐧᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ (Amiskwaciwâskahikan), colonially known as Edmonton, Treaty 6 Territory, Metis Region 4. Many Indigenous nations including the ᓀᐦᐃᔭᐤ ᐊᐢᑭᕀ (Nêhiyaw-Askiy), Dene Sųłiné (Denesuline), Ĩyãħé (Nakón mąkóce), ᐊᓂᔑᓈᐯᒃ (Anishinaabeg), ᖹᐟᒧᐧᐨᑯᐧ ᓴᐦᖾᐟ (Niitsítpiis-stahkoii), and Michif Piyii (Métis), have lived, gathered, and danced on this land since time immemorial. Dance is ceremony for many Indigenous groups, which was banned by colonial governments for generations as part of an ongoing project of cultural and physical genocide. We offer thanks to the Ancestors and Elders who keep Indigenous ways of knowing and dancing alive through their strength and resistance. We understand that it is a privilege and honour for our bodies to dance on this stolen land when so many have been prevented from doing so. Capital City Burlesque is committed to ongoing learning about the responsibilities that accompany our privilege, and to amplifying Indigenous dance and dancers through mentorship and material support both within our troupe and in the physical and social communities we call home.

This is a living land acknowledgement, which is updated as we continue to educate ourselves. It would not have been possible without the direct and indirect teachings of Indigenous people, teachings which result from both physical and emotional labour. We are grateful to everyone who has taken the time to teach us, and we welcome feedback and suggestions for improvement.
